Writing or maybe Press Release? This particular Tool Will certainly Tell

Question-type

We live in an age of information, it is said again and again. But that doesn't mean we live in an age of good information, as last week seemed intent on bearing out. Each day, we have to weigh the credibility of a piece of information and decide whether to put our faith in it.

It's not really feasible for each of us to track each piece of information to its source (nor would it be efficient), so, instead, we use clues — who wrote this, where is this published, does this square with other information we know. The trouble is that these clues aren't perfect indicators, at least in part because even credible publications and professional journalists sometimes regurgitate information without giving it a careful vetting, a process often referred to as "churnalism" (just as gross as it sounds).

UK college assaults LABELLISÉ BASSE CONSOMMATION more than concealed To the north Korea journey

A top Uk college criticised the actual BBC upon Weekend with regard to organizing a good educational visit to To the north Korea to create a good private documented, stating completely place college students who had been unacquainted with the actual programs at risk.

The London School of Economics (LSE) said three BBC journalists - including the respected reporter John Sweeney - joined a student society trip at the end of March, posing as tourists to make a film about the secretive state.

The university said the students had been told "a journalist" would accompany them, but it had not been made clear the BBC's aim was to use the visit to record an undercover film for "Panorama", a current affairs programme.

"This was not an official LSE trip," Craig Calhoun, the Director of the LSE, wrote on Twitter. "Non-students & BBC organised it, used the society to recruit some students, & passed it off."

Tensions on the Korean peninsula have escalated in recent weeks, with North Korea threatening nuclear war against the United States and South Korea.

Alex Peters-Day, general secretary of the LSE's student union, told Sky News the students were only told of the BBC's intentions to make an undercover film at a very late stage, with one saying she was only informed when they were on the plane to North Korea.

She said the BBC had used the students as "human shields".

The university said Sweeney, who graduated from the LSE in 1980, had posed as a history PhD student at the university to gain entry to the country even though he currently had no connections with the institution.

"BBC staff have admitted that the group was deliberately misled to the involvement of the BBC in the visit," the LSE said in an email to staff and students released to the media.

"It is the LSE's view that the students were not given enough information to enable informed consent, yet were given enough to put them in serious danger if the subterfuge had been uncovered prior to their departure from North Korea."

"STUDENTS WARNED"

It said the LSE's chairman had asked the BBC to pull the documentary, which is due to be shown on Monday, but the broadcaster's director-general had refused.

Sweeney admitted he had lied to the North Korean government agency that helped organise the visit, but defended the BBC's actions.

"What the LSE has been doing is putting out stuff which is factually inaccurate in our view," Sweeney told BBC TV. "They're putting words into the students' mouths. The majority of students support this programme."

Ceri Thomas, the Head of BBC News Programmes, said the students had been told twice about the possible dangers of having a journalist on the trip, but were not informed about the broadcaster's plans to make an undercover film because it would have put them in a worse position had the BBC team been found out.

"They had the information we think to make informed consent," he told BBC TV. He said he could not categorically rule out students' lives were put at risk but stated there was an "overwhelming" public interest in making the documentary.

"It's vital that we get in... because the public in this country on mainstream television on tomorrow night has a very, very strong interest ... particularly at this moment in seeing what's going on inside North Korea," he said.

Panorama's website said Sweeney had spent eight days undercover "inside the most rigidly-controlled nation on Earth".

"Travelling from the capital Pyongyang to the countryside beyond and to the De-Militarised Zone on the border with South Korea, Sweeney witnesses a landscape bleak beyond words, a people brainwashed for three generations and a regime happy to give the impression of marching towards Armageddon," it said.

The LSE said aspects of North Korea were legitimate objects of study in several academic disciplines but said the BBC may have seriously damaged the university's reputation, and jeopardised future visits to North Korea and other countries.

"BBC story put LSE students at danger but seems to have found no new information and only shown what North Korea wants tourists to see," Calhoun wrote.

Blackberry mobile phones to inquire government bodies in order to vertueux statement upon earnings

TORONTO/NEW YORK (Reuters) - BlackBerry plans to ask securities regulators in Canada and the United States to probe what it said is a "false and misleading" report that consumer return rates for BlackBerry's new Z10 smartphone have been especially high.

The Canadian company, which has pinned its turnaround hopes on its new BlackBerry 10 line of smartphones, went on the offensive on Friday after the report from Boston-based research and investment firm Detwiler Fenton sent its stock tumbling on Thursday.

BlackBerry said return rates for its flagship Z10 devices have been at, or below, its forecasts and in line with industry norms.

"To suggest otherwise is either a gross misreading of the data or a wilful manipulation," Chief Executive Thorsten Heins said in a statement. "Such a conclusion is absolutely without basis and BlackBerry will not leave it unchallenged."

BlackBerry said Detwiler Fenton had so far refused to share its report or its methods. It said it would present a formal request for an investigation to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and to the Ontario Securities Commission, which is Canada's major securities regulator, over the next few days.

Detwiler has had run-ins with regulators in the past, documents reviewed by Reuters show. But none of the cases involved questions about the accuracy of Detwiler's research or were linked to BlackBerry.

The OSC said it would review the matter once it receives a formal complaint.

"After the first 14 days, quality performance of the Z10 has been in line with similar devices we've launched," said Debra Lewis, a spokeswoman for Verizon Wireless.

A spokeswoman for Detwiler did not respond to a phone call and an email from Reuters seeking comment. The director of research also did not respond to a call seeking comment.

"We believe key retail partners have seen a significant increase in Z10 returns to the point where, in several cases, returns are now exceeding sales, a phenomenon we have never seen before," its report said. Detwiler Fenton gave no details on how it had gleaned this information.

While a number of brokerage firms have in recent weeks published reports saying Z10 sales in the U.S. market are slow, none of them have flagged any major concerns about returns.

Since 2007, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, the industry body that oversees broker-dealers, has fined Detwiler over $250,000 (162,940 pounds) and has cited it for several compliance violations over the past decade.

In December 2011, FINRA sanctioned Detwiler for failing to properly supervise its employees and for allowing its brokers to make more trades than necessary in clients' accounts to boost commissions during a period between 2006 and 2009.

In 2007, the firm, which was then called Detwiler Mitchell Fenton & Graves, settled administrative proceedings that the SEC brought against it for failing to supervise Bradford Bleidt, a former employee who had been simultaneously running a $30 million Ponzi scheme.

TURNAROUND PLAN

BlackBerry is attempting to claw back market share lost to rivals such as Apple Inc's iPhone and Samsung Electronics Co's Galaxy line of smartphones with its new line of devices, powered by the revamped BlackBerry 10 operating system.

The new Z10 touch screen smartphone, the first of its new devices, hit store shelves earlier this year. And the Q10, with BlackBerry's famed physical keyboard, will go on sale in Canada and the United Kingdom before the end of April.

BlackBerry, which has changed its name from Research In Motion, has yet to prove to the market that its new devices can trigger a turnaround. The company expects to report break-even results in the current quarter, but a true picture will not emerge until later this year.

BlackBerry stock has remained highly volatile as analysts are split on whether the turnaround plan will succeed. Research reports often bring major swings in the company's share price.

Shares of Waterloo, Ontario-based BlackBerry, which fell 7.7 percent on Thursday, closed up less than a percent on Friday at $13.64 on Nasdaq.

The Vodafone slashes Czech prices to match Telefonica offer

PRAGUE (Reuters) - Vodafone slashed its calling rates in the Czech Republic on Friday, just a day after rival Telefonica Czech Republic cut its prices, in a market long criticised for lack of competition.

Vodafone said it was launching unlimited calls and text messages along with 600 megabytes of data for 691 crowns (22.81 pounds) per month.

Telefonica offered unlimited call and text messages along with 1 gigabyte of data for 745 crowns on Thursday.

Analysts said the price cuts, to about half the previous comparable offers, were triggered by the prospect of a new competitor joining the market with the auction of new mobile frequencies planned for later this year.

The price cuts, which analysts expect to put significant pressure on margins, would make it more difficult for the new entrant to launch services and win customers easily, they said.

The country's third operator, T-Mobile said on Thursday it would also launch a similar offer in the coming days.

Xbox 720 will probably be center of your current TV SET looking at

With the sale of Mediaroom, Microsoft's IPTV platform, to Ericsson, the Redmond software giant claimed that it would be investing its TV time and efforts into the Xbox television offering instead. It seems, according to a new rumour, that will be mainly targeted around the Xbox 720 (or, simple, "Xbox", as many are calling it now).

The Verge claims that its sources say that Microsoft will use the next generation console in part to combat Google TV. As well as provide internet streamed programming, it will sit between a cable box and television and offer extra content and information on the shows you already watch. Using partnerships with providers to control their boxes through the new Xbox itself.

At least, in the US. In the UK, TV works differently. As well as paid television subscription services from Sky and Virgin Media, and non-subscription platforms like Freesat and YouView, we have Freeview, a digital TV platform that is free-to-air and often doesn't even come through a set-top-box but the digital tuner in the TV itself. It makes it harder for Microsoft to strike deals with individual providers and offer a service that caters for all.

How such a feature will work in the UK, and other regions across Europe, is still to be seen? Or will the new Xbox lock out functionality on a regional basis. We can't see that going down well.

However, The Verge also claims that the Kinect 2 believed to be mandatory with the new console will be used with TV viewing too. Similar to the eye-tracking functionality of the Samsung Galaxy S4, the site's sources say that the Kinect will be able to recognise multiple viewers and will pause the action on screen when a person turns their head away, for example.

These features could still work regardless of where content comes from.

Whatever the TV plans of Microsoft for the Xbox 720, we'll know for sure come May, when the company is said to be unveiling the new console.

Friendships minimize shorter for social bookmarking like people today have ruder instant market research

LONDON (Reuters) - Rudeness and throwing insults are cutting online friendships short with a survey on Wednesday showing people are getting ruder on social media and two in five users have ended contact after a virtual altercation.

As social media usage surges, the survey found so has incivility with 78 percent of 2,698 people reporting an increase in rudeness online with people having no qualms about being less polite virtually than in person.

One in five people have reduced their face-to-face contact with someone they know in real life after an online run-in.

Joseph Grenny, co-chairman of corporate training firm VitalSmarts that conducted the survey, said online rows now often spill into real life with 19 percent of people blocking, unsubscribing or "unfriending" someone over a virtual argument.

"The world has changed and a significant proportion of relationships happen online but manners haven't caught up with technology," Grenny told Reuters on the release of the online survey conducted over three weeks in February.

"What really is surprising is that so many people disapprove of this behaviour but people are still doing it. Why would you name call online but never to that person's face?"

Figures from the Pew Research Center show that 67 percent of online adults in the United States now use social networking sites with Facebook the most popular while the latest figures show over half of the British population has Facebook accounts.

The survey follows a spate of highly publicised run-ins between people who came to virtual blows online.

British football player Joey Barton, who plays for Olympique de Marseille, was summoned by the French football federation's ethics committee after calling Paris St Germain's defender Thiago Silva an "overweight ladyboy" on Twitter.

Boxer Curtis Woodhouse was widely praised after he tracked down a tweeter who branded him a "complete disgrace" and "joke" after a loss, going to his tormenter's house for an apology.

Grenny said survey respondents had their own stories such as a family not talking for two years after an online row when one man posted an embarrassing photo of his sister and refused to remove it, instead blasting it to all his contacts.

Workplace tensions are also often tracked back to conversations in chat forums when workers talked negatively about another colleague.

"People seem aware that these kinds of crucial conversations should not take place on social media yet there seems to be a compulsion to resolve emotions right now and via the convenience of these channels," said Grenny.

Grenny suggested peer-to-peer pressure was needed to enforce appropriate behaviour online with people told if out of line.

He said three rules that could improve conversations online were to avoid monologues, replace lazy, judgmental words, and cut personal attacks particularly when emotions were high.

"When reading a response to your post and you feel the conversation is getting too emotional for an online exchange, you're right! Stop. Take it offline. Or better yet, face-to-face," he said.

Cisco, IBM as well as others form teams upon new-technology task

Cisco Systems, IBM and Citrix have joined forces with other tech companies in a consortium to kickstart the corporate market for software-defined networking (SDN), aimed at making network management easier and cheaper.

Other members of the development platform called OpenDaylight include Juniper Networks, VMware, Microsoft, Red Hat, Intel and Brocade as well as privately held Big Switch Networks and Arista Networks.

Each member will contribute technology such as code to the project in an effort to share the costs of basic research and development, and enable products from different vendors to work together, the companies said on Monday. However, vendors will still be able to customize their offerings to differentiate themselves from rivals.

The SDN market is still considered nascent, but is expected to grow to $3.7 billion (2.4 billion pounds) by 2016 from an estimated $360 million this year, according to research firm IDC.

The first code from OpenDaylight is expected to be released in the third quarter of this year.

"It will be interesting to see how it works in practice. There was some scepticism on our part on the networking industry getting together because they never got together before," said Brad Casemore, a veteran networking analyst at IDC, in Toronto.

SDN products let businesses reduce the amount of networking gear in data centres by replacing much of their function with software that is centralized in one or more servers.

The technology has been in the spotlight ever since VMware bought SDN startup Nicira in August last year for $1.26 billion.

Facebook, cellular video games take into account 1 / 2 time used on iOS, Google android gadgets

Perhaps FB is actually on to some thing in the end using its belief that individuals would like their own mobile phones to become focused much more about the social networking. Flurry Analytics released a new report on Wednesday showing that iOS and Android users spend roughly half their time either playing mobile games, which accounted for 32% of all time spent on both platforms, or using Facebook's mobile app, which accounted for 18% of all time spent. The report, which used both Flurry's own data as well as data from comScore and NetMarketShare, found that mobile users spend 80% of their time using some kind of mobile app on their devices and spend just 20% of their time using some kind of mobile browser.

Safari grows cellular internet browser discuss business lead in spite of warmed competitors

Apple (AAPL) may be under more competitive pressure than it's faced in a while but that doesn't mean its iPhones and iPads aren't still the dominant devices for browsing the mobile web. The latest numbers from NetMarketShare show that Apple's Safari browser has actually increased its lead among smartphone and tablet users and now accounts for 62% of mobile web browsing, followed by Google's (GOOG) Android browser at 22% and Opera Mini at 8%. Safari's share actually marks a significant increase from the previous month when it accounted for 55% of mobile browsing, so it seems that Apple's dominance of the mobile web isn't in danger of shrinking anytime soon.

The reason why the New Patent Taxes Break Won't Help Little Tech Companies

It really is supposed to assist turn Britain in to Europe’s technology middle, however the new tax alleviation on profits produced from patents scheme — known as the Patent Box — may have no effect on most innovative little companies in the Oughout. K. with regards to starts in may, entrepreneurs thought.

That’s for two reasons said Greg Marsh, CEO and co-founder of London-based startup OneFineStay.

“One, because most small innovative companies will be putting their revenues back into growth so they’re not making a profit. Two, because in this sector of tech, very few businesses will hold patents.”

Mr. Marsh’s company, OneFineStay, is a relatively unusual hybrid: part software platform hosting the company’s room hiring service, part hardware — they also sell a remote-controlled electric door lock called the Sherlock that ties into the software platform. Mr. Marsh has patented the hardware, but not the software part of his business.

“Most of our creation as a business would be software or services, [that is] innovation which doesn’t qualify for patent protection,” he says. But they chose to patent the lock: “Fundamentally, we felt like it was an innovative invention capable of getting a patent.”

Mr. Marsh touches on the old problem of software patents: “I used to work on the other side of the fence at Index Ventures. And it is almost impossible to defend software or business process innovation patents in the U.K.”

Jon Bradford, of U.K.-based accelerator Springboard, has a similar story — tax cuts on patents won’t help the startups he knows any time soon.

“For the vast majority of the teams that I am working with it is not relevant. The cost and time to acquire a patent is prohibitive and there are limitations around being able to acquire software patents in the U.K.”

Introduced in the April 2012 Budget, Patent Box legislation was part of a raft of measures aimed to “turn Britain into Europe’s technology centre” as Chancellor George Osborne put it in his 2012 Budget speech.

The tax break will help large companies with strong Intellectual Property holdings such as pharmaceutical companies, and it was representatives from GlaxoSmithKline GSK.LN +0.55%, Rolls-Royce and large manufacturing firm Dyson who were part of the Treasury’s working group in the consultation on the topic.

From the 1st April 2013, any profits that can be attributed to patents, or to a patent that a company holds an exclusive U.K. license for, are subject to only 10% tax. That’s a significant cut from the current corporation tax rate of 23% and the 2015 rate of 21%.

The tax cuts for patents will be phased in over the next four years, with 60% of the cut applicable from now, and the full tax cut available in 2017.

The U.K. Intellectual Property Office (IPO) told us that there had been a modest increase in the number of patents filed by U.K. companies since the announcement of Patent Box, a 4 % rise compared to 2011. Finalized end-of-year figures are not released by the IPO till April, but it is understood that 15,343 patents were filed by U.K. companies in 2011, according to figures gained from a Freedom of Information request and published in the New Law Journal. This means that approximately 16,420 U.K. patents were filed by U.K. companies in 2012.

The IPO was ambivalent about attributing rises or falls to any single cause. “Changes in demand may arise from a range of factors, such as the financial environment, innovative activity in particular technologies, and responses to initiatives such as the introduction of the Patent Box.”

But while the nation’s innovators aren’t flooding to file more patents, some U.K. startups will benefit from Patent Box. Cambridge-based biotech firm, Cambridge Temperature Concepts is one. The company makes devices that monitor fertility rates, and they have patented their core technology.

CEO Shamus Husheer said: “Pretty much 100% of our revenues are from our product which we’ve got a patent for. It appears to be black and white for us, and we haven’t needed to talk to any lawyers, just our accountant. We were going to get patents anyway, we’re not adjusting our company in any way, so this is a gift for us, if you like.”

But, like many other early-stage high-growth companies, they’re not actually going to see any cash anytime soon:

“But we’re not actually profitable, this is something that will be very attractive to us when we start making a profit, and not plowing revenues back into our operation. Which we’re currently trying to expand into America.”

Nevertheless when they do begin turning an income, it will likely be something. “The some other effect is it is a reason for all of us to stay in the actual U. Nited kingdom. It’s a method the U. Nited kingdom. government will help keep our own high value knowledge economic climate jobs. ”

HBO confesses piracy is really a ‘compliment’ this does not harm product sales

Although some businesses are seeking to finish piracy over the amusement business 1 main gamer does not believe it is very the actual problems it is frequently generically mass marketed to the public as.  HBO's hit show Games of Thrones is the most-pirated TV show on the Internet with more than 4 million illegal downloads per episode, however the company's programming president Michael Lombardo believes piracy is a "compliment" to the show and has actually helped sales. In February, Game of Thrones season two was released to record-setting DVD sales, becoming the company's biggest first-day home video release with sales of 241,000 units, an increase of 44% over season one, and sales of individual episodes reached 355,000, up 112% from season one.
